Immunotherapy: The Treatment That Teaches Your Body to Fight Cancer

By Dr. Loveleen Johri

Cancer treatment has changed dramatically over the last decade, and one of the biggest breakthroughs is immunotherapy, a treatment that does something extraordinary. Instead of attacking cancer directly through chemicals or radiation, immunotherapy strengthens the body’s own immune system so it can recognize and destroy cancer cells naturally.

While most people understand chemotherapy or radiation, immunotherapy still feels new and unfamiliar. Let’s understand this powerful treatment in a simple, relatable way.

What Immunotherapy Actually Does

Our immune system already has the ability to detect and destroy abnormal cells. But cancer cells are intelligent. They hide/ camouflage themselves from existing immune cells and send signals that shut down our body’s natural defence system. This is why cancer grows silently.

Immunotherapy works by lifting this camouflage. It removes the “invisibility cloak” cancer uses and reactivates the immune soldiers that were earlier confused. Once the disguise is gone, immune cells can finally recognize the tumor as a threat and begin attacking it.

The most remarkable part is that, in many cases, the immune system remembers this process. So even after treatment ends, the body may continue to keep cancer under control, a concept known as immunologic memory.

How the Body Responds to This Treatment

When immunotherapy starts working, immune cells become more active and begin moving toward the tumor. Some patients even observe a temporary increase in tumor size on scans not because cancer is growing, but because immune cells are flooding the area. This rare effect is known as pseudoprogression, and it often surprises both patients and families.

Over time, if the treatment is effective, the tumor begins to shrink, stabilize, or stop spreading.

Who Responds Best to Immunotherapy?

Not every cancer responds equally. Immunotherapy has shown strong results in melanoma, lung cancer, kidney cancer, lymphoma, head and neck cancers, and some colorectal cancers. The success depends on several factors, including tumor biology, immune activity, biomarkers like PD-L1, and even the patient’s microbiome.

This is why a personalised review of reports is essential before choosing immunotherapy.

Why a Second Medical Opinion Matters

Immunotherapy is powerful, but also complex. It requires careful evaluation of pathology reports, genetic markers, and treatment history to determine whether it is the right option.

At SECMEDS, we help patients find clarity through expert-reviewed second opinions.

• Whether immunotherapy is suitable

• Which tests are needed

• What side effects to expect

• Whether a combination approach might work better

Correct decisions at the right time can dramatically improve outcomes.

In Conclusion

Immunotherapy is not just another treatment, It’s a smarter, more natural way of teaching the body to protect itself.

At SECMEDS, we believe in empowering patients with accurate information, timely guidance, and the confidence to make informed decisions. Because understanding your treatment is the first step toward fighting cancer with strength and clarity.
